French Wire, also known as Gimp or Bullion, is an elegant and professional way to attach clasps, connectors, and ear wires to your beaded jewelry designs.
Made from a tightly coiled metal spiral, French Wire protects your beading thread at connection points, reduces wear and friction, and creates a beautiful, polished finish. It also helps prevent thread from slipping through the openings of jump rings.
Easy to use and incredibly versatile, French Wire is an essential finishing material for bead weaving, pearl knotting, and jewelry making.

How to Use French Wire
-
Cut a small section of French Wire, approximately 1/4–1/3 inch (6–8mm), using regular scissors.
-
Thread the cut section onto your beading needle and thread.
-
Pass your needle through the clasp or connector loop, allowing the French Wire to form a protective curved loop.
-
Pass your needle back through your beads and secure your thread as usual.
Choosing the Right Size
Medium (0.9mm) French Wire works well with most size 10–13 beading needles and thread, including up to size 10 silk knotting cord.
For clasps or connectors with loops approximately 1.5mm or larger, Medium French Wire is an excellent choice. For smaller loops, Fine French Wire may be more suitable.
Helpful Tips
- Avoid bending French Wire at sharp right angles, as this can cause the coils to kink.
- If a kink occurs, simply cut away the damaged section and continue using the remaining wire.
- When using French Wire with jump rings, only a short section is typically needed.
- A little extra wire may be included to account for occasional kinking during handling.
Please Note: French Wire is a delicate, tightly coiled finishing material and should not be stretched.
